Today, our community marked Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We heard stories of the harms done by the Indian Residential School System and how they have crossed generations. We heard stories of how the Mi’kmaq people supported some of the earliest European settlers after they arrived in our region, and we learned of efforts that are now helping not only to preserve indigenous traditions locally, but to share the Mi’kmaq culture with the broader community.

More tourism and large events on the way for Pictou County!

To ensure that this facility continues to provide for our community, we are announcing a federal investment which will allow the Pictou County Wellness Centre to host the BOOST National, a major 2023 Grand Slam of Curling event, as well as other large-scale events in the future.

The Nova Scotia 55+ games are wrapping up today in Pictou County and I would like to send a huge congrats to all who participated!

Every two years, the Nova Scotia games brings communities together for a week full of competition, physical activity, and memorable experiences.

After Hurricane Fiona devastated our communities last year, I was grateful for the many community organizations that stepped up to serve as comfort centres to help people during their time of need.

250 years ago the Ship Hector landed in Pictou County!

The arrival of the Hector represents the beginning of Scottish settlers inhabiting Nova Scotia and it began a trend that saw generations of families from Scotland, including my own, come to call Canada home.

My friend and former provincial MLA, Lloyd Hines, passed away recently.

I had the chance to work alongside him in our shared constituency for my first 6 years as a Member of Parliament, and he was kind enough to show me the ropes when I first got started.

The Pictou Community New Horizons 50+ Club provides incredible opportunities for seniors to gather with one another. To encourage further activity and togetherness, we recently provided funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program to renovate and enhance their kitchen facility!

Our communities would not be what they are without the hard work and dedication of our charities and not-for-profits.

Unfortunately, during a time when they were needed the most – over the pandemic – they had the most limited resources and have since struggled to regain the finances they had pre-pandemic.
