Over the weekend I spent some time with the Maritime Student Congress as they prepare for the upcoming academic year.

Nobody should go without access to the medicine they need. But, a lot of people don’t get the prescriptions they need because they don’t have coverage and can’t afford it.

We are going to change that.

Big Island’s wharf was destroyed when Hurricane Fiona hit our community.

We are helping rebuild this important piece of community infrastructure with support from the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund!

Earlier this week my colleague Mark Holland joined us here at home to talk about the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

We had engaging conversations with providers, as well as seniors in our community with questions on the program.

It was a walk down memory lane today at Frank H. MacDonald school when I stopped by and chatted with some students and staff.

It was a good reminder that every child in Canada should have access to healthy and nutritious food.

As Mental Health Week comes to a close, let’s continue to take care of ourselves and our loved ones.

Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any stage of life. We’re continuing to work collaboratively with provinces, territories, and Indigenous communities to improve access and quality of care.

Yesterday we commemorated the Battle of the Atlantic, and reflected on the sacrifices made during the longest battle of the Second World War.

During the darkest days of the war, thousands of Canadians in the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Merchant Navy, and the Royal Canadian Air Force faced perilous conditions to protect our seas and to maintain supply chains that supported the war effort.

A bit of good news for our ocean!

After Hurricane Fiona, we put some funding towards cleaning abandoned fishing gear (or “ghost gear”) out of the marine environment locally.

It is a significant source of plastic pollution that can remain in the water for centuries.

The Hurricane Fiona Ghost Gear Fund, which included over $7 Million in funding for local communities, has contributed to the retrieval of over 695 tonnes of gear and 453km of rope

The new Eastern Shore Lifestyle Centre is closer to becoming a reality!

This project is receiving a $3.6 Million investment from the federal government to provide Sheet Harbour residents with a new place to gather, connect, and engage with their community for years to come.

With lobster season underway on the Eastern Shore and about to begin on the Northumberland Strait, it’s essential that we make the investments necessary to support the industry that helps drive our local economy.

We want to build an economy that works for everyone.

So, we’re going to raise taxes on the wealthiest to help solve the housing crisis, create a national school food program for kids, advance new coverage for medicine, mental health, and dental care, and forgive student loans for teachers and health care workers that choose to work in small towns and rural communities like ours.
