This past weekend, I was honoured to lay a wreath in commemoration of the Battle of Culloden at the Cairn in Knoydart.

The Battle of Culloden took place on April 16th, 1746, and was the final confrontation of the Jacobite Rising for the civil war which occurred in Britain and lasted almost 60 years.

While the war itself took place over decades, this battle in particular lasted just 40 minutes and was an indisputable defeat for the Jacobites who suffered losses of approximately 1,000 men, compared to the British, who lost just 50 men.

After the conflict, many Scots fled, some of whom landed in Northern Nova Scotia, which is a big part of why we have such strong Scottish ties in our Province today.

I look forward to visiting the Cairn, which is right down the road from where I grew up, each year to commemorate this important piece of our local history.

To my fellow Nova Scotians of Scottish heritage, Slàinte Mhath!
