Health Care

Health care may be a matter of provincial jurisdiction, but requires partners at the federal level to achieve the progress we all want to see for families in need of care.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister met with Premiers from across the country to discuss the challenges facing our healthcare system and to work towards solutions.

As a result of these discussions, we are prepared to make the largest investment in healthcare in Canada’s history:

$196 Billion over the next decade.

Part of the funding includes an immediate $2 billion transfer to provinces which will help address urgent challenges, especially those facing pediatric hospitals like the IWK, emergency rooms, and surgery backlogs.

Agreements will also be negotiated with each Province to address shared priorities between federal and provincial governments to better address:

Family doctor and nurse practitioner shortages

Surgery backlogs and staffing shortages

Mental health and substance abuse supports

Better access of healthcare data to ensure you – and your healthcare providers – have easy access to your results

Thank you to all Premiers for coming together for yesterday’s discussion, and to Premier Tim Houston in particular for the chance to catch up yesterday evening.

I’m looking forward to continuing our work together to make sure our publicly-funded healthcare system is there for you based on your need, and not on your ability to pay.
