Investing in Pictou and Antigonish Counties

It was great to see everyone come out for such a fantastic announcement!

July 2022

It was great to have my friend and colleague, Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor in town to announce over $760,000 for 11 projects across Pictou and Antigonish Counties on behalf of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The funding announced saw three organizations receive $260,000 from the Rediscover Main Street Initiative. These recipients include:

  • $175,000 to Destination Eastern and Northumberland Shores Nova Scotia Association. These funds will support DEANS as it delivers live music events, busker weekends, interactive art exhibits and other themed events to attract people to downtown New Glasgow, Stellarton, Trenton, Westville, and Pictou

  • $50,000 to the Antigonish Tourism Association to deliver live performances, including the first Antigonish Jazz and Music Fest

  • $35,000 to the Town of Pictou to undertake marketing and promotional activities targeting 6,000 additional visitors to the waterfront and downtown

Today’s announcement also saw eight organizations receive over $500,000 through Canada Community Revitalization Fund. These recipients include:

  • $195,000 to the Town of Pictou for two projects which saw $120,000 to reconstruct the sidewalk along Water Street to make it more accessible and user-friendly, including bike racks and benches, as well as $75,000 for a new all-wheels skate park for skateboarding, BMX, scooters, inline and quad skating, as well as wheelchairs

  • $68,250 to the Hillside Community Society to complete a 592 square foot addition to house a kitchen, two washrooms, and an improved entryway

  • $60,000 to the Pictou Landing Fire Department to replace its damaged roof and explore energy savings

  • $50,000 to the Hector Arena Commission Association to replace the community rink’s ageing refrigeration plant, extending the arena’s life by another 50 years

  • $34,911 to the East River Valley Recreation Association to install an accessible natural playground

  • $33,825 to the Trenton and Area Minor Softball Association to make Scotia Park walking track more accessible, as well as upgrading the washroom and adding benches and sheltered rest stations

  • $9,900 to Merigomish and Area Recreation and Social Association to construct a pergola behind the School House Community Centre.

Both of these streams are federal funds that help local areas reinvigorate their downtown cores and revitalize their communities. I can’t wait to see the impact these projects will have on our communities once they’re complete!
