$1.27 Million in Federal Support for affordable housing on Pictou Landing First Nation
Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. The reality is that for far too many people, housing remains out of reach.
This problem is exacerbated for many Indigenous communities because the rules that govern land use on reserves preclude Indigenous peoples from getting a mortgage or owning property in the communities where they were born and raised. This is just one example of systemic racism in Canada and it must be addressed.
Today, I visited Pictou Landing First Nation to announce $1.27 Million in support for new housing units through the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative. These new units will help alleviate serious housing pressures in the community and make a meaningful difference for its residents.
The pandemic has also caused a serious increase in prices of real estate for the broader community. Although having more people choosing to live and work in our communities is a positive development, it is important that we have measures in place to ensure the upward pressure on the cost of a home does not price people who live here now out of the market.
With total investments in excess of $72 Billion through the National Housing Strategy, there are opportunities for our community to build more affordable housing units and ensure everyone has a place they can call home.
Investments like this in communities across Canada will help more families keep a roof over their heads.
I look forward to seeing more housing projects in our community in the days ahead.
Congratulations again to Pictou Landing First Nation for this terrific development. I’m so pleased to see the federal government support this important work at home.
