Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home
Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. Yet, far too many members of our community struggle with finding a place to live.
The housing shortage we are facing has been exacerbated by the recent real estate boom we are seeing in Nova Scotia. The fact that more people are choosing to live and work in our province provides many benefits to our region. However, it has also created immense pressures on local housing markets, and on renters in particular as so many rental units are being sold, leaving tenants without a place to go.
A big part of the solution will require investments to build more affordable housing units.
As part of our National Housing Strategy, we recently contributed $2.2 Million in combined grants and loans to the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society to help construct 12 new homes in the community for families in need of a place to live. This is in addition to the 14 units the organization has put up in recent years.
This project will make an extraordinary difference for the families that will be able to find a home they can afford.
I want to thank everyone involved with the project for turning their community-led vision into a reality.
I look forward to continuing my support for housing projects in the area I represent, because homelessness is simply not something we should accept as part of life in our communities.
