We had a fantastic dinner with the Shvedas and the Johnstons in Port Bickerton

When I was in Port Bickerton I had the privilege of meeting the Shvedas.

Misha, Oksana, Rodion, Illia and Zakharii arrived in Port Bickerton last may from Ukraine thanks to the generosity of Dennis and Katherine Johnston, as well as an outpouring of support from the community of Port Bickerton.

The family fled to Poland for safety, where they were living in a house with many other people while trying to make their way to Canada.

While the Shvedas were exploring options for their family, Dennis & Katherine Johnston, American citizens living in New York, were trying to figure out how they could best help those in need, as Katherine comes from a Ukrainian family.

Dennis and Katherine decided to lend their summer home in Port Bickerton to a family in need. They worked with members of the community to get the home ready for the Shvedas, who are now living in the community.

It was a privilege for me to meet the family and to see them doing so well, with both parents finding work in the community and the kids getting to enjoy a beautiful summer in Nova Scotia.

Thank you to everyone involved in helping set our new neighbours up for a successful experience in Canada.
