SEAN FRASER ANNOUNCES OVER $192,000 IN NEW HORIZONS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM FUNDING
Sherbrooke, NS – Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova, announced today that eleven seniors organizations and projects in Central Nova will receive a combined total of over $192,000, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. These funds will be used for a variety of local projects through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, which supports projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and in their communities. Through the NHSP, the Government of Canada encourages seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences to the benefit of others.
At the Royal Canadian Legion in Sherbrooke, MP Fraser announced that the eleven projects and organizations in Central Nova would be receiving a total of $192,109. During the event, he shared the specifics of six projects, which include:
• Sherbrooke Legion, $7,740: To replace the floor, purchase a new refrigerator and stove, allowing seniors to continue to hold Remembrance Day ceremonies, and to prepare meals with youth
• Port Bickerton Community Centre Club, $17,000: To purchase and install new heat pumps to continue to offer seniors’ activities such as socials, recreational programming and special events.
• Greenfield Oldsters Club, $17,211: To repair the driveway, purchase a dishwasher and chairs, host a community supper and offer a scrapbooking course to increase seniors’ social participation.
• Sonora Community Club, $2,500: To install an oil barrel and hot water tank to continue to offer seniors activities such as games night, seniors’ socials and parties, and events.
• Indian Harbour Lake/Jordanville Community Centre, $24,617: To replace the roof and purchase a commercial dishwasher to allow seniors to continue programs such as intergenerational learning between youth and seniors, and information sessions.
• Goshen Community Centre, $18,207: To renovate the washrooms and purchase chairs to allow seniors to continue to offer activities such as seniors’ games days, meetings and social gatherings.
The remaining five projects are planned to be announced on Sunday April 23rd at 2:00pm at the Harbour Lites New Horizon Seniors Centre, and on Saturday April 29th at 10:00am at the McPherson’s Mills Community Centre. All are welcome to join for both announcements.
The Government of Canada is providing approximately $35 million in New Horizons for Seniors Program funding for close to 1,850 community-based projects approved through the NHSP 2016–2017 Call for Proposals.
