Over $125,000 in New Horizons for Seniors’ Program Funding Announced in Central Nova

New Glasgow, NS - Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves-Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development announced over $125,000 in New Horizons for Seniors Program community-based funding to various organizations in Central Nova on Saturday.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) supports projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and in their communities. Through the NHSP, the Government of Canada encourages seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences to the benefit of others.

“Through the many community-based projects we support each year, our government helps provide seniors with unique opportunities to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others in their community. Initiatives such as this highlight our commitment to the wellbeing of seniors and strengthen the fabric of our society through partnerships.” – The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Canada.

Fraser made the announcement at the Plymouth Community & Recreation Centre as part of a tour throughout the riding, visiting recipients of the funding.

The announcement included funding for each of the following organizations:

• Stella Maris Parish Hall, $25,000, to repair the chimney, grade and gravel the driveway, purchase and install stage curtains and install a sound system.

• Plymouth Community Recreation Association, $22,252, to install four heat pumps to allow the hall to remain open in the winter for fitness class and Lunch and Learn programs for seniors.

• Pictou County Council of Seniors, $15,692, to purchase a public address system and assist seniors clubs to improve community between one another, recruit new members and promote activities for seniors.

• Lansdowne Outdoor Recreation Development Association (LORDA), $12,705, to purchase a wood chipper and utility trailer to allow seniors to continue to operate the Maple Sugar Program and maintain the access to trails.

• Goshen Community & Recreation Centre, $18,003, to install heat pumps to ensure continued senior participation in activities such as card games, concerts and community events.

• Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, $16,000, allow seniors involved with the organization to develop an intergenerational program, train seniors as volunteers, hold a health fair and provide various social activities.

• Indian Harbour Lake/Jordanville Community Centre, $14,252, to replace windows and doors, and purchase a rowing machine in order to continue to offer pot luck suppers, fitness classes and healthy living programs to seniors.

• Moser River Community Hall, $2,700 to allow seniors involved with the organization to organize and participate in new presentations on safety and services in the community which will allow them to stay longer in their homes.

The next application period for New Horizons for Seniors Funding began on June 16, 2016, and will close on July 29, 2016. More information can be found at http://www.esdc.gc.ca/.

• The Government of Canada is providing approximately $35 million in New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) funding for close to 1,850 community-based projects approved through the NHSP 2015–2016 Call for Proposals.

• Eligible organizations can receive up to $25,000 in NHSP funding for community-based projects that are led or inspired by seniors.

• Since 2004, the NHSP has funded close to 17,800 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada, with a total Government of Canada investment of more than $360 million.
