Congratulations Justice Rowe

Monday's appointment of Justice Malcolm Rowe to the Supreme Court of Canada, and Newfoundland & Labrador’s first ever appointment to the Supreme Court, serves as proof that the Government of Canada is listening to Atlantic Canadians.

Justice Rowe’s appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada demonstrates that Atlantic Canadians can compete on the national stage. I am certain that he will serve our region with distinction and that he will bring a strong and reasonable perspective to the table on issues of national importance. We are fortunate to have such a distinguished individual serve on our highest court.

Your Atlantic Canadian MPs are vocal on issues that matter most to you, and today’s news is no exception. I am pleased that our concerns regarding regional diversity on the Supreme Court were addressed in the selection process.

In keeping with our campaign commitment, the Government has implemented a new non-partisan process that seeks to make judicial appointments based on the merits of the individual, as opposed to their political relationships. This process is one that respects regional diversity and has led to the appointment of a new Atlantic Canadian Supreme Court Justice whose qualifications are beyond reproach.

This is a time to celebrate the appointment of a stellar individual who will serve as our region’s representative on the Supreme Court of Canada.
